The mission of the Blue Sky Studios Systems department is to provide best-in-class customer service, technology and process improvement in support of the Studio’s digital animation production and development environment. 

The Senior Windows Workstation Administrator supports the mission of the Systems department by providing Level 1 through Level 4 Windows support, technology improvement and leadership for our 450+ seat digital animation studio. The primary focus is the support of the Studio’s Microsoft Windows infrastructure; secondary responsibilities include support for the Mac infrastructure. The Studio's senior workstation administrators contribute integration, troubleshooting and project support for a wide-range of technologies and processes. This position reports to the Head of Systems and works closely with the department’s staff on daily task assignments and priorities. 


Essential Functions/Responsibilities

  • Serves as a representative of Blue Sky Studios, displaying courtesy, tact, consideration, teamwork and discretion in all interactions with other members the Studio community, its vendors and the public.

  • Comprehensive primary support for the Windows environment, including but not limited to: 

    • 160+ Windows 7 workstations, laptops; Windows Server 2003 and Server 2008R2 servers.

    • Workstation provisioning and configuration management: Ghost, PDQ, WSUS. 

    • Security: Symantec Endpoint Protection and Encryption.

    • Authentication and Directory services: Active Directory, Samba, OpenLdap, DNS, DHCP. 

    • Data backup and restore: folder redirection with offline file sync.

    • Configuration management and workstation security: Active Directory Group Policy management.

  • Secondary Support for:

    • 250+ Mac OS X 10.8 workstations, laptops and servers.

  • Define requirements, document specifications and estimate prices for upgrades and new technology initiatives.

  • Work on special projects and other duties as assigned by the Head of Systems and the Technical Coordinator.

  • As needed after-hours production support and scheduled weekend maintenance support.

  • Responsible for Level 4 support: defining and tracking software, hardware and integration issues with vendors.

  • Training for Help Desk staff.

  • Thorough record keeping and documentation including inventory, project, task and time tracking.

  • Documentation of technologies and procedures.

  • Other projects, and duties as may be required or assigned



    Skills, Abilities, Special Licenses or Certificate:  

  • Proven technical aptitude (indicated on resume and supported by technical references) to provide best-in-class comprehensive technical support for the Studio’s Windows and Mac environments including the technologies listed in the Technologies section, below.

  • A working knowledge of networking, including the ability to troubleshoot and define network issues.

  • Ability to troubleshoot network attached storage issues on Windows and Mac clients. 

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills including the ability to successfully execute on multiple projects.  

  • Ability to relate to, and effectively communicate with, staff that have varying levels of technical knowledge.

  • Process oriented, but flexible around business needs.

  • The Senior Windows Workstation Administrator must possess an in-depth knowledge of Microsoft Windows technologies, including but not limited to: 

  • Operating systems and services:

    • Windows 7; Windows 8 experience is a plus.

    • Windows Server 2003 and 2008R2; Windows Server 2012 experience is a plus.

    • Active Directory, DNS, DHCP.

    • CIFS, Samba.

  • Hardware

    • HP 9470 laptops and zSeries workstations.

    • VMWare, including ESX VSphere and workstation VMs.

    • Nvidia graphics cards.

    • HP monitors including HP DreamColor; Hyundai Stereo monitors.

    • Wacom Intuos and Cintiq tablets

    • HP and Xerox printers, scanners, faxes

  • Applications

    • Symantec Endpoint Protection and Encryption.

    • Ghost, PDQ, WSUS; experience with SCCM is a plus.

    • Microsoft business and productivity applications, including Office, Project, Sharepoint.

    • Adobe applications including the Creative Suite.

    • Animation production applications including ZBrush, Mudbox, Maya

    • Avid video editing

    • Video playback: RV-RVIO, VLC, QuickTime Pro.

    • Scripting languages: Windows shell and power shell. VB Script, .NET, Perl or Python are a plus. 

    • Browser-based email clients; experience with Zimbra Productivity Suite is a plus.

    • Aruba wireless clients. 

  • Experience with the following is a plus:

    • Apple OS X versions 10.7, 10.8. Experience with 10.9 is a plus.

    • Network attached storage (NAS) and NFS; experience with Isilon storage is a plus.

    • Apple iMac, Mac mini, MacPro and MacBook Pro.

    • OpenLdap, NIS.

    • Fedora v14, CentOS v6.5

    • Network protocols; experience with Brocade / Foundry networking equipment is a plus.


Education and/or Experience Required:

  • College degree in a related field and/or a combination of education and experience that would be equivalent to that level of professionalism, problem solving and analytical skills.

  • 5 + years equivalent senior administration experience in a business or production environment.  Specifically: Previous experience in customer support, computer operations, system administration, or a related area.

  • Demonstrable track record of introducing new and/or improved technology in a business or production environment.

  • Microsoft and HP certifications are desirable; Apple, Linux and networking certifications are a plus.


Working Conditions and Environment/Physical Demands:

  • Office working environment

  • Systems provides IT support for a 24/7 Animation Studio:  Flexible working hours and overtime required, including early morning, late evening and occasional weekends.  Some systems maintenance is scheduled for evenings and weekends. 

  • Walking/bending/sitting

  • Lifting of up to 50lbs on a regular basis.
